Cook, of Cornersville, Tennessee. Mentions that Milton Haynes was a graduate of West Point Military Academy, Class of 1837, and served in the Confiderate States Army, and attained the rake of Lt Col., during the Civil War. He is given credit for information on the Haynes family. Milton compiled a Haynes Family History in about 1850. The MS is located at the Tennesse State Archives, Nashville, Tennessee. Several references to this work have been made in other Family Histories. It has been proposed by Charles Clemson, Lancaster, PA, that the confusion about Joseph/Christopher Haynes, came out of the MS by Milton. See: Notes, on Joseph (Christopher) Haynes for more detail.
- Milton Andrews Haynes entered West Point in 1834 and graduated in July 1838 with a commission as second Lieutenant in the 3rd Artillery. He served in the Cherokee Nation transferring Indians to the west and participated in the Florida- Seminole War of 1839. During the Mexican War, from June 9, 1846 to May 31, 1847 he served as a Captain of the 1st Tennessee Cavalry Volunteers. During the Civil War he served as Lieutenant-Colonel of the Tennessee Artillery, CSA. He was an expert in heavy artillery and was the author of a state sponsored training guide "The Confederate Artillerist Instructions in Artillery, Horse & Foot". Prior to and after the Civil War, Milton Haynes practiced law at Pulaski, Nashville, Memphis and in Sevier County, TN. In 1844-1845 he was editor of the "Southwestern Law Journal & Reporter".
