    Notes 
    • Serves as a selectman for several years from 1671 - 1685. Grants of land within the town were a subject of dicussion and dificulty. In 1674, John Stevens was one of ten men chosen to see "if it be convenient to give away any more land or how & to whome".

      On February 11, 1678, he took the oath of allegiance to the king. His name was on the list of "proprietors" of Andover who had also been
      householders before 1681.

      In 1682, John was one of five men chosen "to make articles with such
      person or persons as they shall judge fit" about setting up a saw-mill,
      fulling mill, and grist mill upon Shawshin river.

      The first record of alarms of hostile Indians @ Andover was in October 1675. In spite of all vigilance & precautions, they attacked on April 8, 1676. The town was never safe from Indians. In winter they came on snowshoes, and in summer, by the rivers, plundering and killing and then disappearing as suddenly as they had come.

      John Stevens was in active military service. He was Sergeant as early as 1674, Ensign in 1685, and Lieutenant in 1689, when he was serving in the Indian wars at Casco Bay, where he died on March 4th or 5th, 1688/89. The inventory of his estate amounted to
