Sylvia's Paystub - Washington DC
When my grandfather, Ward Hedden, deployed to Guadalacanal in 1944 during WWII (after enlisting in March '43), my grandmother Sylvia wound up working as a clerk for a bit in Washington DC for the Office of Scientific Research and Development. I'm still not quite sure how this occurred (Sylvia was a career teacher), and unfortunately, it's still only bits and pieces as she never wrote anything substantial down about it. But it's fascinating because of that office's role in creation of things like the A bomb, the fact Sylvia mentions meeting it's director Dr Vannevar Bush, and just for it being a time capsule of what pay/a check looked like then!
